Hide and Seek

Easton is such a delight. Even when he’s grumpy, I can’t get enough of him. Lately, he’s been big into games. His two favorites are Hide and Seek and Musical Chairs. The other day, he pulled a chair out into the living room, turned on some music, and ran around and around the chair, having his own little game of Musical Chairs. Playing Hide and Seek with him is hilarious. He never wants to count, only hide. He’ll run off and tell you where he’s planning on hiding and if you say, “Hmmm…where could Easton be?” he’ll yell out and let you know exactly where he is. My favorite is walking in and finding him “hiding” out in the open with his hands over his eyes. If he can’t see us, we can’t see him, right? He asks to play Hide and Seek several times a day. In the car on our way home from a family dinner the other night, his little voice piped up from his seat:

E: Knock knock!

M: Who’s there?

E: Hide and seek!

M: Hide and Seek who?

E: You play Hide and Seek, me?

Love this little guy.

New House

For a while now, Bryce and I have wanted to move. We love our community and we love our condo’s floor plan. But we felt like it was time to trade in our third story home (those stairs with four kids, not to mention groceries–it’s quite the production!) with shared walls and no yard for a house. The only problem was that we cannot currently sell our condo unless we want to lose a lot of money. We bought right before the housing bubble burst and it might be a while before our condo is worth what we paid for it. We tried finding renters, so that we could move out and rent a house, but had no luck.

Then, when Mark and Brenda were visiting Liam in the NICU, Mark encouraged me to check about building a new home with a local builder called Ivory Homes. When I did, I was delighted to find out that we would qualify to build a new home with them, even while we still owned our condo. On top of that, they have a 3-year lease guarantee program. This means that as soon as we close on our new home, Ivory brings in a management company to take over our condo. They will find renters, do maintenance work, etc. The best part is, Ivory will pay us a certain amount of rent even if the condo is vacant, for three years. Originally, we thought this would help us qualify for more house. After all, if this rent is guaranteed by contract, it makes sense that we could count it as income and that it would off-set our mortgage payments on our condo. Sadly, this isn’t the case. So, we are building the house that we can afford considering that, on paperwork, we will still be carrying the full weight of this mortgage, too. There are some other silly things–they won’t count the past two years of Bryce’s substantial freelance income from work he does on the side because of a tax form technicality–but, really, I don’t need a huge house. I’m just excited for our brand new house with a yard and a garage and an unfinished basement just waiting to add space and function to our home down the road! In truth, we have felt very grateful during this whole process. In the past couple of months, we’ve paid a large sum of hospital bills related to Liam’s NICU stay, paid off the van we bought in March, and paid our down payment on the new home. It’s been a miracle in our lives.

If you’re interested, here’s a link to a virtual tour of a house like ours. Except we’ve made some changes. Here’s our floor plan:

We've moved some things around, added 2 feet across the back of the house, and added some other fun stuff.

Bryce made this mock-up to show how our "wall of windows" will look. We opted for a big window where the fireplace normally goes.

One of the main reasons we’re building at this particular location is the community. We’ll be living in a community called Highbury at Lake Park and it is really lovely. Here’s the website for the community. Within a minute or two of our home, we’ll have a great Montessori school (I dream of maybe working there someday!), a brand new STEM elementary school (Science Technology Engineering Math), a charter school, a traditional public elementary school, a great rec center, a fishing pond, waterways to walk along, a golf course (in case we decide to take that up), and lots of walking paths. And Bryce’s commute will be shortened to less than 10 minutes! We’ll be a lot closer to Salt Lake and are excited to get into the city more often for shows and events.

Today, we had our pre-dig meeting with our superintendent and they start digging next week. I can’t believe it’s actually happening! I’ll post pictures of the progress along the way. Such an exciting time for our little family!

Mt. Timpanogos Cave

For a long time now, I’ve wanted to make the hike up to tour Mt. Timpanogos Cave. I have a friend who was a cave ranger there for many summers and she’s shared some great stories. Well, we finally made it happen this past weekend. We left Liam and Easton with some friends who were generous enough to tend them that morning and headed into the canyon. Just to add to the drama of the morning, Amelie got sick to her stomach on the way there. She didn’t eat much dinner the night before, didn’t each much breakfast that morning, and the car ride just did her in. Luckily, when it happened we were right by Target, so I ran in, grabbed some wipes, a drink for her, and a change of clothes, and we were off again. You buy tickets in advance for the tour and if you miss the time slot you signed up for, you could be out of luck, so we were in a bit of a hurry. Once we got there, it was a steep hike up the mountain to the cave. Took us about 1.5 hours and it was intense! My feet and legs were sore for a couple days afterward. I was so proud of Amelie and Calder!

I think this was on the way up. We brought coats because it was going to be cold in the cave.

A stalactite called "The Heart of Timpanogos." Pretty cool stuff in the cave.

Lots of interesting formations. We learned about cave coral, drapes, flowstone, and lots of other neat things from our tour guide Andy.

On the way back down. The kids actually complained more on the way back down. It was a workout, that's for sure!

The views were spectacular. I just kept getting blown away by how beautiful it all was.

Yellowstone and Austin Reunion

At the end of July, we took a mini road trip up to the Yellowstone area to meet up with some of the Austin clan. We decided to leave at 3 am Tuesday morning to leave us some time to explore Yellowstone before meeting everyone at our cabin later that afternoon. A little over six hours of driving later, we were there. And it was beautiful! We didn’t have time to get over to the parts of Yellowstone where you see all the great wildlife, but we did get to see some very cool geysers.

Yellowstone is just amazing. So surreal and funky and cool.

Well, I think it's a good word for it.

And almost as amazing as the geyser itself, the crowd waiting to see the geyser.

It was kind of a whirlwind tour (we drove home Thursday night), but it was wonderful to see some Austins (Sarah and her crew, Colin and Jill and their kiddos) and visit Yellowstone. We can’t wait to return to Yellowstone and spend some more time there!
